A disastrous premiere got The Dream of Gerontius off to the worst of all possible starts, but Elgar's monumental response to the writings of Cardinal John Henry Newman is now widely regarded as among his finest works. The Gabrieli Consort and Players here set out to re-live those early performances in a manner which would give Elgar cause to rejoice.
